How to Start Homeschooling

New to homeschooling and have no idea where to start? We compiled everything you need in an easy-to-follow list.

  1. Consult HSLDA to find out the homeschool laws in your state. HSLDA is a nonprofit organization advocating for homeschool rights. They have compiled the laws for each state and information on homeschooling on their website.

  2. Find a charter school, umbrella school or submit an intent to homeschool to your local school depending upon state laws. We love Homelife Academy. Their process is streamlined and everyone involved is super helpful.

  3. Create a schedule for your school year. Each state will have different requirements for the number of days, hours and subjects required for each grade. I love to use Confession of a Homeschooler’s Yearly Calendar to plan out our year. We also grab this Student Planner from Amazon every year to keep our days focused and remain aware of the days we have school and when we are on vacation. It is the perfect solution for our family because it allows me to easily track attendance and glance back on what we did each day when I submit grades. It also helps the little practice executive functioning skills. I write down the assignments for each week and he checks them off as they are completed.

  4. Take a learning styles quiz and spend time with your child to discover the way he or she best learns. There are lots of different methods of homeschooling and children are not one size fits all.

  5. Grab a SmartBots MakerSpace Membership and let us help you cover any classes you are not interested in teaching or would like to have a certified instructor teach. In our virtual, hands-on classes, students learn by doing. Explore our membership options to bundle classes for one low price. Our membership enrollment window closes July 31st.

  6. Join the Top Picks Homeschool Curriculum Fair curated by Heather Bowen. You will discover vendors who cover all topics and subjects in one convenient, virtual location. You will also gain access to a huge Facebook group of veterans and newbies networking to provide the best education possible to our children.
